Harnessing Reef Traditional Owner Knowledge

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The $30 million Traditional Owner Reef Water Quality Program was announced today.

The new program will be delivered with Traditional Owners. It will leverage traditional knowledge and the success of the Reef Trust Partnership to improve Reef water quality.

The program will support valuable on-ground actions that could include:

  • community capacity building
  • enhancing habitats that are important for water quality, such as mangroves and wetlands
  • reducing the impact of invasive species in Reef catchments
  • managing hotspots for water quality pollution
  • monitoring and reporting against Reef 2050 water quality targets

The program will align with the Reef 2050 Traditional Owner implementation Plan. It will incorporate cultural and ecological health into water quality activities.

It will also support targets in the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan.

Poor water quality is a key threat for the Great Barrier Reef. This new program is one of many significant steps that Australia is taking to increase efforts to improve water quality.
